An intrauterine device (IUD), commonly known as a contraceptive coil, is one of the most popular and effective methods of long-term contraception. It provides protection against pregnancy for up to several years, and its effectiveness exceeds 99 per cent. It is a discreet and reversible method, as it can be removed at any time during a visit to the doctor.
The contraceptive coil is fitted by a doctor during a brief procedure in a gynaecologist’s surgery. It works locally within the uterine cavity, making it difficult for sperm to survive and preventing a fertilised egg from implanting. The exact mechanism of action depends on the type of IUD.
It does not contain any hormones. Its effectiveness stems from the release of copper ions, which reduce sperm motility and viability. In addition, it causes a local inflammatory reaction in the lining of the womb, which prevents fertilisation and the implantation of the egg.
It gradually releases small doses of the hormone levonorgestrel, which is a synthetic form of progesterone widely used in contraceptive pills. The hormone thickens the cervical mucus, which reduces the likelihood of sperm reaching the egg, and also inhibits the growth of the lining of the womb. Hormonal IUDs are divided into two types:

Yes, but this is rare. The greatest risk occurs in the first few weeks after the procedure, which is why a follow-up appointment with your doctor is recommended a few weeks after the procedure.
No, your partner cannot feel the IUD itself, as it is located inside the womb. Occasionally, they may feel the control threads, which soften over time; if necessary, your doctor can trim them.

No. Once the coil has been removed, fertility usually returns very quickly – many women can become pregnant as early as their first menstrual cycle.
Yes, an intrauterine device does not restrict your daily activities. You can freely take part in sports, go to the swimming pool, swim in the sea or use the sauna. The presence of the IUD does not affect the safety of these activities or its effectiveness.
Once an intrauterine device (IUD) has been fitted, the first follow-up appointment is recommended after around 4–6 weeks – the doctor will check that the IUD is correctly positioned. Subsequent check-ups are limited to a routine gynaecological examination once a year, unless worrying symptoms appear beforehand, such as severe pain, heavy bleeding or a suspicion that the IUD has moved. In such cases, you should see your doctor immediately.
